Steam Engines in sub-zero temperatures?

Back in the Steam Era, 'stoking the fires' & 'keeping the fires stoked' were important jobs.
But how were the steam lines, brake lines, valve & pistons kept warm when the Engine is idle for long periods? Were there provisions for allowing


Everything was powered by steam so low temps were not a problem, as a rule. There were water and oil heaters in the tenders also fed by steam. Fires were usually kept burning as a spot fire as mentioned above in coal burning engines.
