How thick is 10W40 oil? For using in a 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine?

My car is making a noise due to running with low oil. I am gonna try and use a thicker engine oil and see what happens. Should I use 10W40? or a thicker one? or could that be too thick for a small gas engine?

Are you changing oil or adding oil. ? Check your manual, but 10W40 sounds reasonable
